Ebony, Macassar

(Diospyros celebica)

East Indies

Ebony, Macassar (Diospyros celebica) from East Indies

Considered to be rare and is one of the most expensive timbers on the commercial market. The growth range of the species is reported to include the East Indies, Philippine Islands, and the Celebes Islands of Indonesia, which are also called the Sulawesi Islands of the East Indies.

With heartwood that is dark brown to black interspersed with contrasting bands of yellow to golden brown, Macassar ebony yields a bold and attractive look by offsetting the darkest of the dark woods with a variety of color.
