Honey Locust Burl

(Gleditsia triacanthos)

North America

Honey Locust Burl (Gleditsia triacanthos) from North America

The Honey locust is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It is mostly found in the moist soil of river valleys from southeastern South Dakota south to New Orleans and central Texas, and east to central Pennsylvania.

Honey Locust is also referred to as Honey-shucks locust, Sweet Locust, Three-thorned acacia, and Thorntree.

The wood of honey locust possesses many desirable qualities but is little used because of its scarcity. The sapwood is generally wide and yellowish in contrast to the reddish-brown heartwood, providing an attractive grain. The wood is dense, very heavy, very hard, very strong, stiff, and resistant to shock.
