Maple, Ambrosia(Acer macrophyllum)Noth America
The growth range of the species is limited to the Northwestern United States of America; Alaska to California to west central Idaho, mostly west of the Cascades, usually found growing lower than 1,500 meters in elevation. Ambrosia Maple is also referred to as wormy Maple. The heartwood is generally creamy in color with occasional colorful streaks of black, gray, brown, and red/green. These detailed designs in the wood are highly sought after by many are caused by Ambrosia beetles (Monarthrum scutellare) that have burroughed into the wood. Only a very small percentage of maple trees have this beelte present making it a rare find.
